The event features the dramatized readings of the work of juvenile detainees that have participated in the Spirit Awakening creative writing and life skills program “Writes of Passage.” Guest artists performing on stage with the Probation Youth include actress Frances Fisher, (Titanic), Debra Wilson, (Mad TV), Esai Morales, (La Bamba), Paralympic Gold Medalist Stephani Victor, Yoga Guru Bryan Kest, comedian Michael Colyar and Rev. Michael Beckwith of Agape International Spiritual Center.

The event benefits the Spirit Awakening Foundation and its programs in the juvenile halls and probation camps – programs that include the foundation’s “Winner’s Circle Scholarship” fund, annual “Tribal Oasis Retreat” to Esalen Institute, after-care mentoring program “Spirit in the ‘Hood,” cultural and arts events and activities, and the Foundation’s annual “Angels of Redemption” cultural/in-service trips to Ghana, W. Africa.Originally from Ghana, West Africa, Spirit Awakening Foundation was founded by its CEO Akuyoe Graham, a performing artist, writer and youth advocate After penning her critically acclaimed one-woman show Spirit Awakening, Graham formed the organization to further the reach of her advocacy work for youth particularly those that had been abused and neglected. Now in its 17th year, Spirit Awakening Foundation is looking to expand with a group home pilot program that would utilize more holistic programming and focus on participants’ mind – body connection as a path to wholeness and transformation. Graham wants to offer children in Spirit House group home an opportunity to experience healthy nutrition, stimulating and thought provoking classes integrated with physical exercises that would enhance the emotional as well as the spiritual well being of the individual child.

The Foundation is also currently developing the feature film version of the play Spirit Awakening with Academy Award Producer and foundation sponsor Robert Chartoff as Executive Producer.

There will be an after party and EVERYONE is invited to that. The show runs from 2:30p.m – 4:00p.m, after party immediately following in the lobby.
